In case you have not seen this great article, here ‘tis
The State Government invites submissions from consumers and businesses to have their say in the proposed gambling pre-commitment scheme for poker machines. The link below will give you all the details you need. The governments preferred option for pre-commitment is extremely weak and looks to me like a watered down customer loyalty scheme. Their idea for a card is not compulsory and you can set a limit for the day and when you have reached that limit a pop-up screen will tell you that you reached your limit and then gives you the option to continue playing or to quit, which really defeats the whole purpose of a pre-commitment in the first place.
When I was addicted to the pokies and was “investing” all of our money into my local poker machine venue to feed the government’s own addiction, I desperately wanted to feed the gambling beast – and a pop up screen that would give me the option to keep going would have been a minor distraction and would never have stopped my frenzy or have saved the rent money.
Here are 4 points that I think pre-commitment needs to include:
1. Compulsory (so everybody who wants to gamble must have a card)
2. Non-transferable (fingerprint or other identification necessary)
3. A default setting that the gambler needs to opt out of
4. Once a set of parameters are input and a limit is reached then gambling stops for at least a (day, week, month?).
So if you, like me, feel strongly about this measure, would you please have a look at following link and make a submission before the 21st of September. It may be our only chance to have a say on this important issue!
